Protecting Your Leather Couch from Poolside Fun

Protecting Your Leather Couch from Poolside Fun

A leather couch is an elegant addition to any home, but summer fun can put it at risk. From kids running indoors with wet costumes to surprise spills from poolside refreshments, water can wreak havoc on your luxurious leather couch. Did you know that prolonged exposure to moisture can increase the risk of leather cracking by up to 70% over time? Or that improperly treated water-damaged leather loses its durability twice as fast as well-maintained leather?

Fear not! With a few proactive measures and clever hacks, you can ensure your leather couch survives the summer splash season in style.

Wet Leather: Why It’s a Problem

Leather is a natural material that needs its oils to stay soft and durable. When exposed to water, these oils can break down, leading to discoloration, stiffness, and cracking. Add chlorine, salt, or even sunscreen from summer activities, and the damage risk increases significantly.

Prevention First: Dos and Don’ts

Dos:

  • Use Protective Layers: Cover your couch with a washable cotton throw or waterproof furniture cover. These can shield it from accidental drips and spills.
  • Create a Drying Station: Place towels near entryways so family and guests can dry off before entering the living room.
  • Regular Conditioning: Apply a leather conditioner every 6 months to keep the material hydrated and resilient.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid Direct Cleaning with Water: Never use water to clean spills on leather. Always use a damp microfibre cloth instead.
  • No Heat Exposure: Do not use hairdryers or place the couch in direct sunlight to dry. These can accelerate cracking and fading.
  • Say No to Harsh Cleaners: Avoid vinegar, bleach, or alcohol-based products that can strip away the leather's protective coating.

Hacks to Handle Water Damage

Already dealing with water damage? Here’s how to salvage your couch:

  • Blot, Don’t Rub: Immediately blot the affected area with a soft, dry cloth to soak up moisture.
  • Use Cornstarch or Baking Soda: Sprinkle it over wet spots to absorb excess moisture. Leave it for a few hours before brushing it off gently.
  • Condition the Leather: Apply a leather conditioner to restore oils and reduce stiffness.
  • DIY Leather Restorer: Mix equal parts of distilled water and white vinegar for a gentle homemade cleaner. Test on a hidden area first.
